The 174-year old Ann Arbor News published its final edition today.
The move to cease publication was announced in March by its owner, Advance Publications, which plans to replace it with AnnArbor.com, a daily news site with twice weekly print editions. The online site is expected to go live on Friday.
The Detroit Free Press reports that newsroom staff had shrunk from about 60 four months ago to 20 today and the Ann Arbor Business Review reports that about 25 former News staffers have been hired to work for AnnArbor.com. The Ann Arbor Business Review is also owned by Advance Publications and will end its print edition on Aug. 13 and become part of AnnArbor.com.
The downtown headquarters of The Ann Arbor News, designed by acclaimed Detroit architect Albert Kahn, is expected to be put up for sale.
