Police union backs Flushing Township board member recalls

By Todd A. Heywood | 07.23.09 | 8:04 am

The Flushing Township patrolmen union has passed a vote of no confidence against four township board members. The move now puts the union on the recall band wagon against those four members.

The union made the move after the board members — Mike Gardner, Scott Minaudo, Bill Noecker and Mark Purkey — voted to lay off Officer Bill Baughman during a June 25 meeting. Baughman was served the lay off notice last week and it is effective July 31.

The union claims the four board members are “incompetent” and “putting the safety” of the public in jeopardy, says a report in the Flint Journal.

“We feel they have created a dangerous situation for the community,” [Police Officers Association of Michigan Union President Louis Cook] said. “It’s just a mess.”

But one board member disagrees.

“I understand them opposing our position,” [Bill Noecker] said, adding that he doesn’t agree that the four are putting the township at risk.
