Bernero hooks Lansing firefighters endorsement

LANSING — Virgil Bernero on Wednesday racked up the endorsement of the city’s firefighters in his bid to be re-elected as mayor of Lansing.

“Mayor Bernero has been an outspoken advocate for public safety in our community and has been supportive of the men and women of IAFF Local 421,” said Bryan Epling, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 421. The union represents over 200 firefighters in the city. “Because of Bernero’s hard work and commitment to public safety we have been able to maintain adequate and safe staffing levels, which allows us to focus on our job–keeping the residents and visitors of our community safe.”

“I believe that Lansing’s fire fighters are second to none,” said Bernero. “In addition to keeping Lansing safe, these men and women are incredibly active in our community-donating time and money to a wide range of non-profit causes. Balancing budgets is tough work, but it’s nothing compared to fighting fires and saving lives. I am incredibly honored to have these heroes standing beside me as I move forward with my campaign.”

Last week, Bernero announced he had received the endorsement of the UAW, representing 29,000 area workers.
