More strange bedfellows on Dillon’s plan

By Ed Brayton | 07.22.09 | 12:07 am

Another Republican has endorsed the proposal by Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon, a Democrat, to combine the health plans for all public employees into a single pool. The leader of the Michigan Senate Republicans, Mike Bishop, is on board with the idea, according to the Detroit Free Press:

Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop said he has told House Speaker Andy Dillon he’ll do whatever he can to advance Dillon’s plan, which hasn’t been written yet as a bill. Others endorsing Dillon’s plan include Attorney General Mike Cox and Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder, both of whom are seeking the Republican Party nomination for governor…

Bishop said that as a Republican, if he had made the proposal it would have been doused as anti-public employee. But coming from a Democratic leader gives it more weight.

Dillon “has raised the issue at exactly the right time,” Bishop said. “Over the long haul, this will save all the money” that Dillon “says it will.”

Later, Bishop added, “I’m proud of him for doing it.”

Gov. Jennifer Granholm, on the other hand, has already spoken out against the proposal, as has the Michigan Education Association.

Anything Bishop supports, I oppose. This guy is a Republican parrot and obstructionist. If it isn't tax cuts, he's opposed. His wife is/was a teacher. He takes from the system and then does everything he can to undermine it.

Narrow-minded thinking. The budget problems are a reality. This sounds like a reasonable proposal to reduce waste and expense. I would like to hear more about it.
