Southfield City Council member William Lattimore was arraigned in federal court Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to bribery charges, The Detroit News reports.

Lattimore is charged with a felony for accepting $7,500 in 2007 for influencing fellow council members to support a jewelry store’s move to Southfield from Detroit.

According to the indictment, political consultant Sam Riddle and congressional candidate Mary Waters bribed Lattimore on behalf of a jewelry store owner for letter of support to other Southfield City Council members and a vote to secure to jewelry store’s move.

The indictment states that money flowed from the jewelry store owner to Riddle to Lattimore and that a total of $12,500 was scheduled to be paid to Lattimore in installments.

Since Lattimore pleaded not guilty he won’t have to resign unless he gets convicted. The Southfield City Charter mandates that convicted felons cannot hold public office.
