Peters outpacing opponents on fund raising

With new data just out from the Federal Elections Commission, the Detroit Free Press notes that Rep. Gary Peters, the first-term incumbent in the U.S. House from Oakland County, is far outpacing his opponents in raising funds for a 2010 election fight.

Peters, a Bloomfield Township Democrat, has raised nearly $992,000 in this two-year cycle to date — more than $539,000 of it from individual contributors. As of the end of the most recent filing period, June 30, Peters had nearly $850,000 on hand.

That’s a far cry from Paul Welday, a Republican set to challenge Peters in the Oakland County district. His most recent filing with the Federal Election Commission shows he raised $2,850 in the three months ending June 30. He has almost $105,000 cash on hand – but the vast majority of that, more than $100,000, is from a loan he has given his own campaign.

The other announced candidate for the Republican nomination to challenge Peters, former state Sen. Andrew (Rocky) Raczkowski, has just over $8,500 on hand but he also has $70,000 in debt.
