President Barack Obama is expected to announce a $12 billion program to develop the nations community college system during a visit to Macomb Community College this afternoon.
The New York Times reports that during a conference call with reporters last night, officials said that $9 billion would be directed to programs to help ensure that students graduate from community college and are prepared for real world jobs.
Administration officials also said that $500,000 would be directed toward developing online curriculum to enhance course work at community colleges.
“In an economy where jobs requiring at least an associate’s degree are projected to grow twice as fast as jobs requiring no college experience, it’s never been more essential to continue education and training after high school,” Obama wrote in a Sunday Washington Post article.
In May Michigan’s unemployment rate hit 14.1 percent.
