Welcome to Earth, Senator Graham

By LoRayne Apo-Joynt | 08.13.08 | 11:35 pm

Thank goodness Senator Lindsey Graham isn’t one of our Michigan senators. It’s as if the man lives on a different planet and only popped in for a quick visit when he said at a McCain campaign event here in Michigan,

“The reality of Russia today is it’s a country that’s abandoned democratic principles under the Putin regime and even to this day…It’s a country that’s rolling back a free press; it’s a country that’s destroying an independent judiciary; it’s a country where if you speak too loudly, you go to jail.”

Huh?

Sen. Graham acts as if people aren’t being jailed here in the U.S. for “speaking too loudly.”

Or that our country isn’t rolling back its once-free press.

Or destroying its no-longer-independent judiciary.

Only an alien from another planet unfamiliar with our recent history might have missed the similarities between contemporary America and Russia.

One has to wonder with all the trips that Sen. Graham has made to campaign on behalf of presidential candidate John McCain whether there might not be a different role intended for Graham in a McCain administration — extra-terrestrial ambassador, perhaps?
