Kalamazoo police won’t ask about immigration status

The chief of Kalamazoo’s Department of Public Safety, Jeff Hardley, has drafted a policy intended to assure undocumented immigrants that they can seek help from law enforcement without risk of deportation.

According to the Kalamazoo Gazette, police will be prohibited from asking about immigration status during traffic stops or in connection with non-violent crimes under the new policy.

“We have people in our community living in the shadows, afraid to come out and seek out help,” Hadley told a crowd of 600 at a public forum hosted by the West Michigan church-based advocacy group, the Michigan Organizing Project last week. He said he hopes the policy will be finalized next month.
