Calif. prison officials to visit Muskegon, Standish prisons in Mich. for possible partnerships

By Todd A. Heywood | 07.10.09 | 10:25 am

California and Michigan prison officials continue to negotiate a move of California prisoners to two of Michigan’s soon to be closed prisons. Michigan officials have been in California this week as part of the negotiations which started with a letter from Gov. Jennifer Granholm of Michigan to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California. That letter indicated Michigan would be happy to play host to overflow prisoners from California.

Prison officials in Standish, near Saginaw, say the moves by both states have created a sense of optimism, according to a report in the Bay City Times.

Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said the state is interested in keeping the 550 prison guards and officials slated for lay off with the closure of the two prisons on the job. But, that hope is not keeping the Standish facility occupied. Officials say the move of prisoners from the prison will continue in preparation for a closing at the end of July.

Michigan’s prison population peaked in 2006 with 51,454 prisoners, and this year it is at 48,000. Granholm wants to reduce that number by 3,000 to 45,000 by Oct. 1 with early releases in order to save money in the state budget which is facing a projected $1.7 billion budget hole. By reaching the 45,000 prisoner mark, the MDOC will be housing the lowest number of prisoners since 1999.

Michigan pays $30,000 per year to house a prisoner, while California pays $46,000 a year to house its prisoners.

California currently has a prison population of 168,000, with 7,600 of these prisoners housed in private prison facilities in such states are Arizona and Mississippi.

INCARCERATING PEOPLE “FOR PROFIT” IS IN A WORD….WRONG!
Even if one does not ask or pretends not to see the rope and the flashing red flag draped around the philosophical question standing solemnly at attention in the middle of the room, it remains apparent that the mere presence of a private “for profit” driven prison business in our country undermines the U.S Constitution and subsequently the credibility of the American criminal justice system. In fact, until all private prisons in America have been abolished and outlawed, “the promise” of fairness and justice at every level of this country’s judicial system will remain unattainable. We must restore the principles and the vacant promise of our judicial system. Our government cannot continue to “job-out” its obligation and neglect its duty to the individuals confined in the correctional and rehabilitation facilities throughout this nation, nor can it ignore the will of the people that it was designed to serve and protect. There is urgent need for the good people of this country to emerge from the shadows of indifference, apathy, cynicism, fear, and those other dark places that we migrate to when we are overwhelmed by frustration and the loss of hope.
My hope is that you will support the National Public Service Council to Abolish Private Prisons (NPSCTAPP) with a show of solidarity by signing “The Single Voice Petition”

I am so confused. Didn't we just release a whole bunch of prisoners because we couldn't afford to pay for them? So, as long as bankrupt Arnold pays for them instead with his newly minted CA script, MI is all in?

I get the Gov. is trying to drum up business to protect jobs. But as the previous comment says, incarceration for profit/revenue is not acceptable no matter who. If we are going to lock up people up, it should cost us.
