State government on furlough today

By Ed Brayton | 07.06.09 | 11:00 am

If you have business to do with one of Michigan’s state government agencies today, you’ll need to pick another day to do it. Today is a mandatory furlough day for most state workers so don’t expect a returned phone call or an open Secretary of State office until tomorrow. The state police, unemployment call centers and some public health-related jobs are exempt from the furlough and will be operating as normally today.

This is the second of six unpaid furlough days mandated by the governor as a cost-cutting measure. The next four will be every other Friday starting July 24th. The move is expected to save the state $22 million.
