Conflicting reports on Riddle’s latest allegations

By Ed Brayton | 07.01.09 | 10:20 am

Sam Riddle, the longtime aide to Monica Conyers who is at the center of multiple scandals and investigations, is still talking. What he’s saying, however, seems to be a matter of some dispute. The Detroit News reports that in an interview them, Riddle talked about receiving $50,000 in “hush money” from the Michigan Democratic Party:

Political consultant Sam Riddle says federal investigators have questioned $50,000 he received in 2006 from the Michigan Democratic Party– payments he described as election year “hush money.”

In a recent interview with a Detroit News editor, Riddle said the Democrats paid him not to say negative things about Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who faced a challenge from Republican businessman Dick DeVos in the November election that year.

That led to denials by MDP chairman Mark Brewer, who said the $50,000 contract with Riddle “was for media consulting services, and we did in fact consult him about appropriate messages and people to talk to for the fall campaign.”

But this morning on a radio show, Riddle appears to recant the charge of receiving hush money.

Riddle also denied the characterization by the Detroit News that he was offered “hush money” by the Michigan Democratic Party to refrain from saying anything negative about Granholm during the 2006 election cycle.

“(Michigan Democratic Party Chairman) Mark Brewer is entirely correct on this. The contract was for media consulting. And I did that quite a bit of it.”

At this point, Riddle seems to just be firing blindly in all directions. It’s difficult to know what to believe from him.
