State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith

State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith formally announced Monday she is seeking the nod of the Democratic Party to become Michigan’s next governor. The lawmaker from Washtenaw County’s Salem Township made an unsuccessful run for the governorship in 2001, making her the first African-American to run for the highest elected office in Michigan.

Smith, who is term limited in 2010, ran as then-U.S. Rep. David Bonior’s running mate in the 2002 Democratic primary, losing to then-Attorney General Jennifer Granholm, who won the general election that fall and re-election 2006

Smith, whose daughter-in-law, Rebekah Warren, represents an Ann Arbor-area state House seat, is entering an increasingly crowded Democratic primary field which could include former state Rep. John Freeman, Michigan State University trustee and former football coach George Perles, and current Lt. Gov. John Cherry.

Although the lieutenant governor has not yet made a formal announcement declaring his candidacy, he is expected to the be the frontrunner and has been racking up endorsements.
