Conyers asked to impeach Judge Bybee

By Ed Brayton | 06.30.09 | 12:41 am

U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has been asked by a group called Velvet Revolution to begin impeachment proceedings against Judge Jay Bybee for his role in providing legal cover for the torture of detainees during the Bush administration.

We have also sent a letter to House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, asking that he initiate impeachment proceeding against Jay Bybee, who is now a sitting federal judge. The evidence is clear that, during his confirmation hearings, Mr. Bybee misused the classified status of his torture memos to portray a false picture of his legal history. Several Senators have stated publicly that Mr. Bybee would not have been confirmed if they had been aware of his torture memos.

The group has filed papers to have 12 attorneys for the Bush administration disbarred for taking part in writing or approving a series of legal memos justifying torture of detainees held at Guantanamo Bay and around the world. Bybee was one of those attorneys but he is now a federal judge.

Given that Rep. Conyers stonewalled impeachment activists for seven years on impeaching Bush and Cheney it is hard to believe he would suddenly step up for Bybee's impeachment.

On the other hand that would take less courage than going up against Pelosi to enforce our Federal Anti-Torture Laws against Bush, Cheney and their torture advocating lawyers.

I would think however that Rep. Conyers may be a bit preoccupied explaining his actions related to his wife's Bribery Conviction.
