Land eyeing Ehlers’ seat?

By Ed Brayton | 06.29.09 | 10:59 am

The Grand Rapids Press’ Polpourri blog speculates that Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land may be targeting Vern Ehlers’ seat in the U.S. House if the eight-term congressman chooses not to run for re-election in 2010. The Press’ Talking Michigan Politics podcast, on the other hand, says that Mike Bouchard offered Land the lieutenant governor slot on the ticket if he wins the Republican nomination for governor in 2010.

The speculation about Ehlers’ seat has also gone national. Roll Call also has an article about it, which notes:

Ehlers has always faced minor opposition and won re-election by large margins, but voters in his district split evenly between President Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the 2008 presidential race. When Ehlers retires, it is all but certain that there will be a competitive open-seat race.

Fortunately for Republicans, a possible heir to Ehlers’ seat emerged last week. Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, who lives in Ehlers’ district, dropped out of the gubernatorial primary and would be well-positioned to jump into the House race should Ehlers decide not to run again.

But Land may well be too conservative for that district, which includes the more liberal East Grand Rapids. Ehlers is a moderate Republican who has done well in that district, as was Gerald R. Ford when he held that seat.
