Presumed Republican nominee John McCain will arrive in Michigan on Wednesday for a fund-raising blitz and a campaign appearance with independent Sen. Joe Lieberman.
McCain will hold three fund-raising events Wednesday — two high-end soirees in Birmingham, at the Townsend Hotel and Big Rock Chophouse, and one at the Shenandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield, aimed at young professionals with tickets starting at $250.
The candidate’s campaign reports that McCain also will appear with Lieberman at a non-money campaign stop during the day, though details have not yet been released. Lieberman will solo-host a campaign event that night at the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills. The Connecticut senator has endorsed McCain and has made prior campaign appearances with him, much to the chagrin of his former Democratic colleagues.
McCain’s visit comes after a trip to Michigan on Aug. 5, when he visited the Fermi II nuclear plant in Monroe. The McCain camp clearly believe polls that show Michigan to be a potentially competitive state between McCain and Democratic nominee Barack Obama: Wednesday’s visit will be the Arizona senator’s fourth trip to Michigan in five weeks.
And though his appearances have spanned the state, McCain’s upcoming pleas for money will all be in Oakland County — Michigan’s wealthiest county and the stronghold of support for former rival and native son Mitt Romney, whom McCain defeated in the national primaries and who has given his endorsement, staff and, likely, donor mailing list, to McCain.
