After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. Wheeler on McCotter’s new group

By Ed Brayton | 06.22.09 | 1:20 am

Rep. Thad McCotter has co-founded a new group in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Congressional Sovereignty Caucus. It appears to be mostly in response to President Obama’s nomination of Harold Koh as legal counsel to the Department of State. Marci Wheeler at Michigan Liberal identifies the characters this group is promoting:

They’re off to an inauspicious start, IMO. For their inaugural special guests, they’re hosting a guy who illegally sold weapons to terrorists (Ollie North), a man who attacks Obama for being the first Muslim President (Frank Gaffney), and a man under criminal investigation for torture (Dougie Feith).

McCotter’s co-founder for the group, Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado, wrote an op-ed recently objecting to the Koh nomination. In that op-ed, Lamborn repeated the commonly heard religious right mantra that America is a “Judeo-Christian” nation, an idea that is considered little more than a nonsense phrase by serious historians.

And, let's not omit that Rep. McCotter also supports House Bill # 1136, clever method to undermine the annual cap on the importation of non-skilled foreign workers through the H-2(b) visa program.

This bill would allow employers to avoid the NON-counting of “returning” employees who have been here in the US before the current year. That's like saying (1) + (1) + (1) + (1) + (1) = (1)

A third-grader knows better, but Mr. McCotter thinks the US should legitimize this “non-math” to support greater employment of non-skilled immigrant workers in the US all the while Michigan has the highest unemployment in the nation & my county has the highest unemployment rate in Michigan. [ 28% unemployment! ].

Mr. McCotter's “good idea” comes on the heels of Department of Labor regulations, enacted two days before GWB left office in January, that employers of H-2(b) applicants need no longer “certify” that the employers have actually attempted to find US workers to fill the job positions in question.

Again, Mr. McCotter finds himself in dubious company on this one.

Others from Michigan's DC delegation in support of this nonsense are Senator Carl Levin; Reps. Bart Stupak (author !); John Dingell; Candice Miller; Mike Rogers plus at least one candidate for the Michigan Governor's office, Pete Hoekstra.
