Despite evidence of the impact of mercury on children and public health, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette last month joined with 24 other state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit to scuttle new EPA regulations that would reduce mercury emissions from power plants.

State says 28-year-old police officer’s death in Macomb influenza A(H1N1) related

The Michigan Department of Community Health today confirmed the death of a 28-year-old Madison Heights police officer, and Macomb County resident, from inluenza A(H1N1). The officer becomes the state’s second confirmed death from the virus, once called swine flu.

MDCH says the officer had “underlying health conditions,” but spokesperson James McCurtis said he could not elaborate on what those conditions were.

“He was not our patient,” McCurtis said. McCurtis said the other health conditions may be covered by privacy laws regarding health care. He did note health issues like asthma could play a role in mortality from the virus.

As of Saturday June 13, the MDCH reports there are now 655 confirmed cases of of influenza A(H1N1) in the state. That is up from a 418 cases reported by the state in June 11. The World Health Organization declared a pandemic on June 11 as well.
