Michigan’s jobless rate soared to 14.1 percent in May, while the rest of the country saw an unemployment rate of 9.4 percent, up one half a percent from April, according to the Detroit News. The numbers are based on a data released by the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth.

It’s the highest monthly rate recorded in the state since July 1983. Since May 2008, unemployment has jumped by 274,000 people, or 67.2 percent. Unemployment nationally rose by a slightly larger 70.0 percent in the same period.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm is quoted as saying about the new numbers, “It’s not good.”
