Senators vote to cut college scholarships

By Ed Brayton | 06.17.09 | 12:54 am

As predicted yesterday, a state Senate subcommittee has voted to eliminate the Michigan Promise scholarship, which offers families up to $4,000 to pay for college. There are nearly 100,000 people qualified to get those scholarships in the fall and if this vote is sustained by the legislature and signed by Granholm, they won’t be getting them. The cuts would save about $140 million in the state budget, which must be cut by nearly $2 billion in the next fiscal year due to declining tax revenues.

This is extremely annoying. I now have to come up with a grand in a couple months. I did a year of Americorps and with Michigan's (Broken) Promise I was able to pay to get an EMT certification while attending university for linguistics. I resent that we as a state still fund undercover narcotics operations in Alpena and the war on drugs but are defunding college scholarships and financial aide. It'd cost less to send everyone to college than to emprison them for most of the rest of their lives. But I guess we got to keep them young kids in jail. Fuck your generation.

my granddaughter has worked very hard to maintain a high grade average. now she is threated with the loss of her grant. no wonder people old and young have lost faith in the system. we work
hard and try to be good citizens. and all we get are lies from every direction of so called authority.
she is a good example of a an hard working american citizen, and you people are good examples of do nothings.
