The partnership of Chrysler and Fiat may help boost Michigan’s economy by prompting Italian auto supply companies that already work with Fiat to open plants in the Detroit area in order to supply the factories that will build new Chrysler cars on Fiat platforms. Crain’s Detroit Business reports:
Italian automotive suppliers to Fiat S.p.A. could look to set up shop in the Detroit area following the formation of Chrysler Group LLC, the Chrysler-Fiat alliance spawned from Chrysler’s bankruptcy.
Massimo Denipoti, president of the Detroit-based Italian American Alliance for Business and Technology, says he is aware of two Italy-based powertrain component suppliers that are in “advanced stages” of setting up shop in metro Detroit…
Dave Andrea, vice president of industry analysis and economics at the Troy-based Original Equipment Suppliers Association, said a move of Fiat suppliers to North America would be similar to that following the DaimlerChrysler merger, but would be different as well.
“I think we’ll see that influx more quickly and significantly because of the localization of (Fiat) platforms, Andrea said. “That wasn’t an element we saw in (DaimlerChrysler).”
Chrysler has committed to building five new vehicles based on a Fiat platform starting in 2012.
