Perles still intends to run for governor

By Ed Brayton | 06.15.09 | 10:51 am

Last fall, former Michigan State football coach and athletic director George Perles signaled his intention to join the 2010 governor’s race as a Democrat, but since then he has said little about it. The Detroit Free Press now reports that he still intends to do so:

Currently a member of the MSU Board of Trustees, Perles talked about his plans for the next few months and about his ambitions to seek Michigan’s highest office.

He plans to organize a committee for his campaign while continuing his work as CEO of the Motor City Bowl, which will enter its 13th year on Dec. 26. He also has a golf outing planned to raise money for the Special Olympics. The event, entering its 22nd year, will be Aug. 3 at the Lansing Country Club.

Perles is 74 years old and his only political experience so far is being on the MSU Board of Trustees. If he files to run he would be the only Democratic challenger to Lt. Gov. John Cherry that has announced so far.
