The World Health Organization has upgraded is pandemic alert level for Influenza A(H1N1) to a worldwide pandemic. The organization said there are more than 30,000 confirmed cases of the virus, commonly referred to as “swine flu” in 74 countries worldwide.
On Thursday morning, Genesee County confirmed 10 cases of the virus in the county as well. Those infected ranged from 4 to 54 years of age, and eight of the people were hospitalized for the infection. As of Tuesday, the Michigan Department of Community Health website indicated there were 418 cases of the virus across the state.
On top of the Genesee County number, the Michigan Department of Community Health noted today that a 58-year-old Roscommon County man with “underlying health problems” succumbed to the virus June 4. MDCH labs only confirmed the Influenza A(H1N1) infection late Wednesday night. This is the second death associated with Influenza A(H1N1) in Michigan. Earlier this year, a Macomb County resident died of the disease.
