Stupak urges Granholm to find stimulus money to keep prisons open

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 06.11.09 | 2:25 pm

U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) is asking Gov. Jennifer Granholm to reconsider a plan announced Friday that would close eight prison facilities six of which are in his Northern Michigan district.

“I am deeply concerned with the impact the closure of these facilities will have on the communities in which they are located,” Stupak wrote in a letter to the governor. “The six Northern Michigan prisons and prison camps are the largest or among the largest employers in their local communities.”

Stupak said that states including Kentucky, Ohio, Oregon and South Dakota have used funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to prevent prison closures and layoffs and he urged the governor to work with the state’s congressional delegation to locate funds to keep the prisons operating.
