Report identifies West Michigan as ripe for wind farm development

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 06.03.09 | 3:39 pm

A Michigan Public Service Commission board report released today identifies four regions of the state as having the most potential for the development of wind farms. Three of the regions are coastal stretches of West Michigan.

Region 1: Allegan County

Region 2: Antrim and Charlevoix Counties

Region 3: Benzie, Leelanau and Manistee Counties

Region 4: Bay, Huron, Saginaw, Sanilac and Tuscola Counties

The Proposed Report of The Michigan Wind Energy Resource Zone Board was prepared by Public Sector Consultants and The Michigan Land Use Policy Institute for the MPSC. The report was mandated by the Clean Renewable and Efficient Energy Act that was enacted last year.

As the Traverse City Record Eagle reports, the document does not address zoning issues. Some residents of areas rich with wind power object to the building of windmills near their homes.
