Bing communications director had past drug charges

By Ed Brayton | 06.03.09 | 12:30 am

In the wake of the sudden and unexpected resignation of Robert Warfield, communications director for Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, the Detroit Free Press reports that Warfield had a past that includes a conviction on drug charges:

Bob Warfield, who abruptly resigned Monday as Detroit Mayor Dave Bing’s communications director, was arrested in 2004 on a charge of possessing marijuana and cocaine, leading to his pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of using controlled substances.

Warfield, 60, received six months probation from the Wayne County Circuit Court. He did not immediately return messages today seeking comment.

The revelation about Warfield, who was a top adviser to Bing, comes a day after Warfield resigned as Bing’s communications director.

It is unknown whether there is any connection between those past offenses and his resignation.
