The Michigan Department of Transportation suddenly has an extra $11 million thanks to underbidding for roadwork projects along Saginaw County’s Interstate 675, the Saginaw News is reporting.
Engineers had projected work on the two-year, eight-mile project that began Wednesday would cost $53 million, said Department of Transportation spokeswoman Anita Richardson. The lowest bid to repair concrete lanes and ramps and fix bridges came in at $42 million — nearly 21 percent less than estimates — from C.A. Hull Co. Inc. of Wixom Lake.
But don’t expect MDOT funders to put the excess money anywhere but Saginaw County, the report says. According to the report, the county has the worst bridges in the state. MDOT reports that of the 97 bridges in the state, 56 are “either structurally deficient or structurally obsolete.”
As a result, MDOT is retasking the $11 million to speed up repair and construction work on seven bridges in the county.
MDOT officials told the Saginaw News that bids for projects usually come in 5 to 8 percent under projected costs.
