Poll shows Hoekstra, Cox leading Republican race for governor

By Ed Brayton | 05.28.09 | 10:08 am

Yes, I know it’s far too early to start looking at polls, but since this ABC/Epic-MRA survey is the first major poll to come out that includes the names we know are going to be running for governor in 2010 it has to be reported. For the Republicans, things look unsurprisingly bunched up:

On the Republican side, Rep. Pete Hoekstra is leading the way with 27 percent. But Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox is not too far behind at 26 percent.

And 19 percent said they would choose Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land.

And on the Democratic side, this can’t be good news for Lt. Gov. John Cherry:

But when we included a list of potential Democratic candidates, 49 percent picked Sen. Debbie Stabenow, while 14 percent selected Lt. Gov. John Cherry, and 5 percent picked Wayne County Executive Bob Ficano.

Losing by better than 3/1 to someone who has no intention of running is not a good sign for Cherry’s prospects, even at this early date. On the other hand, the poll also found that when they didn’t give names of candidates, 80% of respondents said they were undecided, so clearly the results of this poll are not likely to last. At this point, such polls are likely to reflect pure name recognition rather than a serious commitment to voting a particular way.
