In a session that lasted into the evening on Tuesday, the Michigan House of Representatives voted 73 to 41 to pass HB 4377, a ban on smoking in public places, places of employment and food service establishments, with exemptions for casinos, pre-existing cigar bars and home offices. Last minute attempts to amend the bill and take out those exemptions failed and the House adjourned immediately after taking the vote for final passage of the bill.

    Hip hip, hooray!

Is it expected to pass the Senate?

Yes its expected. Good news. It’s about time! It is hypocritical to exempt state run businesses. And if people want to drive the extra time and miles to go to OK because they can’t deal with it…good for you! We nonsmokers, which are now the majority in KS will now frequent the casinos more often. Keep on driving…

Once the fanfare wears off and people can't smoke outside in subzero temperatures while wearing gloves, many small neighborhood bars will get out the ashtrays again. Here in Chicago, the local police are more concerned with the city ordinance keeping bar patrons inside, bothering absolutly no one, in areas where real crime is an issue.

Just give everyone a choice. Is it really too much to ask? Can't there be a basic solution where restaurants/bars are encouraged to be smoke-free, but not required. So you end up with a situation where you have both, therefore making both sides happy.

I've never smoked a cigarette, and never plan to. But anyone with a truly objective stance would have to prefer a compromise. Be pro-choice.

I read some news about this, Las Vegas is really down on their gambling revenue too and they allow smoking. It’s clear it’s the economy and not the smoke-free act,” said Kathy Drea, public policy director of the Illinois Lung Association. Well as long as they don’t get in the way of other players/customers, I think everything is okay.
