McCain returning to Michigan

By Alexa Stanard | 08.06.08 | 12:39 pm

Just one day after visiting the state, news that Sen. John McCain would return to Michigan next week leaked out.

McCain plans to visit Michigan for back-to-back big-ticket fund-raisers on Aug. 13, according to the Detroit Free Press. Both are scheduled to be held in Birmingham, in McCain’s stronghold of Oakland County, at the Big Rock Chop House and the tony Townsend Hotel.

According to an invitation obtained by the Freep, the Townsend event’s hosts include Jim Nicholson, president of PVS Chemical, John Rakolta, chair of Walbridge Aldinger, developers C. Michael Kojaian and Robert Schostak, Ambassador Ron Weiser and state Attorney General Mike Cox. Individual tickets run $2,300 to $28,500 and benefit McCain Victory 2008, a federal political action committee.

The Big Rock event is aimed at young professionals whose youth is no impediment to making bank: individual tickets cost $500 to $10,000.

McCain’s upcoming visits might help the Republican candidate recoup some of the press coverage he lost yesterday to local events: the candidate’s visit Tuesday to the Fermi II nuclear plant in Monroe County competed, unsuccessfully overall, for press attention with the state’s primary elections.
