Former Vermont Gov. and Democratic National Party Chairman Howard Dean told a crowd at a Kalamazoo Valley Community College foundation fundraiser on Wednesday that the election of Barack Obama was the sign of a new political reality in the United States.
From The Kalamazoo Gazette:
“The last election changed America in way many people don’t understand yet,” Dean told an audience at the downtown Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites. “For the first time in my life, more people voted who were under the age of 35 than those over the age of 65. That is an earthquake.”
Dean also said the GOP will regain strength, but only after it becomes more centrist:
“They have a very strong contingent on the right that’s not comfortable to a lot of Americans,” Dean said. “There’s a very, very militant right and the people who challenge that now end up like Arlen Specter, getting challenged by someone in his own party.”
Dean also said he supported President Obama’s health care plan.
