Bing vows that Detroit ‘will retain ownership of Cobo’

By Minehaha Forman | 05.20.09 | 4:42 pm

DETROIT — Mayor David Bing announced at a press conference Wednesday that he is negotiating a deal that would lease the Cobo Convention Center to a regional authority that would in turn take over operation of the facility and fund the expansions needed to keep the center home of the North American International Auto Show.

Bing said it was important to get stakeholders back at the negotiating table and work out another deal that the council will approve of. “The city will retain ownership of Cobo,” Bing told reporters.

Bing said he has spoken with members of the city council about the leasing of the convention center and that some of them are likely to switch their voted that killed the last negotiated deal 5-3, according to the The Detroit News.

Hours before Bing’s press conference a state Senate committee heard a plan that would give the city council another chance to accept the same Cobo transfer deal that it previously rejected.

If city council members reject the deal again, Detroit risks losing the auto show to Oakland County’s Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, which would be expanded with the help of county taxpayers.
