FBI probe won’t stop Waters’ 2010 congressional bid

Former state Rep. Mary Waters resigned from her post at the Wayne County prosecutor’s office last month after her name was tied to a federal investigation, but it won’t stop her from running for a congressional seat.

Waters, who is a candidate for the 13th Congressional District in 2010, said she won’t let the probe “derail” her political career. She ran an aggressive campaign last year that almost unseated incumbent Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick.

Waters would not give specifics of the probe or mention what was being investigated. She has stated that her probe has nothing to do with last year’s congressional campaign.

Her friend and former congressional campaign manager from last year’s race, Sam Riddle, is also linked to a federal probe. Riddle was named in an FBI investigation into into a $47 million sludge hauling contract approved by the Detroit City Council.

Riddle made news recently when he posted an invitation on his Twitter page to a “beer and wings” party for all those who received a letter informing them that their conversations with Riddle had been wiretapped by the FBI.

Waters said she resigned because it was “the right thing to do.” But that she had “done nothing wrong.”
