DETROIT — U.S. Rep. John Conyers told a gathering of progressive activists gathered at the Cobo Convention Center on Saturday that he has withdrawn his support for Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Obama.
“[Obama] had no doubt she would make a good Supreme Court justice and I don’t either. But I am not supporting somebody who is — especially when she is waiting to be considered as a possible nominee for the highest court in the land — she can write a letter telling us some U.S. attorney has done a good job when everyone in the state knows that he hasn’t,” Conyers said in an interview with Michigan Messenger following his address at Cobo.
The attorney is question is a current U.S. attorney, but Conyers could not recall his name. Calls to members of the congressman’s staff to clarify which of Michigan’s two U.S. attorneys Conyers was referring to were not immediately returned.
The current U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, Terrance Berg, assumed his post in August 2008 and previously served under Granholm as chief of the high-tech crimes unit when the governor was Michigan attorney general. The current U.S. attorney for the Western District of Michigan is Donald Davis.
Asked if his withdrawal of support for Granholm killed the governor’s chances for an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, Conyers, who had initially suggested Granholm as a Supreme Court pick, response was: “Yes.” Conyers said he withdrew his support for Granholm in a meeting with Obama at the White House Friday. Late last week, word leaked out of the White House that Granholm had made Obama’s short list for potential replacements for Associate Justice David Souter, who recently announced his retirement.
Mark Brewer, chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party was present when the congressman, who chairs the powerful House Judiciary Committee, made his remarks.
“I’m not sure what John Conyers is talking about in terms of a recommendation about a U.S. attorney, so I am not able to comment,” Brewer said. “It’s all news to me.”
