Detroit councilwoman Collins won’t seek re-election

By Minehaha Forman | 05.15.09 | 9:32 pm

Detroit City Councilwoman Barbara-Rose Collins announced Friday that she will withdraw her bid to regain her seat on city council.

Collins, 70, has worked in government for 40 years. In that time she has served on the Detroit Public School Board, was the majority whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, and most recently on the Detroit City Council.

As a councilwoman Collins made news recently when she vocally opposed the transfer of the city-owned Cobo Center to a regional authority by singing “Onward Christian Soldiers” at a council meeting and turned heads when she wore a yellow gown and tiara to a council meeting on her birthday.

Collins joins fellow councilwoman Sheila Cockrel in her decision not to seek re-election.

This leaves two open slots for the 206 people seeking a seat on the council.
