DETROIT — Newly elected Mayor Dave Bing won’t have as much competition in his race to secure a full mayoral term as had been anticipated.
With top contenders such as City Council President Kenneth Cockrel Jr., former Deputy Mayor Freman Hendrix, and Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans out of the race, Bing’s most well-known opponent in the Aug. 4 primary will be Tom Barrow, who ran unsuccessfully to unseat Mayor Coleman Young in 1989 and has served time in prison for tax evasion.
Barrow, 60, is partner in the Barrow, Aldridge accounting practice and Fidelity Refunding Services, according to a press release sent out last week.
Other contenders who filed petitions to enter the mayoral race are Robert Allman, D’Artagnan Collier, Sarella Johnson, Kenneth Mitchell, Deborah West-Someah-Kwaw, and one contender who also ran in February’s special election primary, Duane Montgomery, whose plans for Detroit include taxing casinos and arming city workers.
