Mysterious move: Hendrix doesn’t offer comment on new elections filing

By Minehaha Forman | 05.12.09 | 5:47 pm

DETROIT — Former deputy mayor and two-time Detroit mayoral contender Freman Hendrix showed up at the Detroit Department of Elections around 3 p.m. Tuesday, an hour before the deadline to file petitions for public office.

Hendrix would not say what position he was filing for, though there has been some speculation that he’s taking a look at one of the nine spots on the new Charter Revision Commission, a body created by Proposal C, which passed with overwhelming support during last week’s special election. The elected revision commission, once assembled, will have great flexibility to rework the city charter.

But Hendrix, who ended up endorsing Dave Bing’s successful mayoral bid, hasn’t quite ruled out running for mayor again either.

In a recent interview on WHTD 102.7 FM with “Street Talk” host Reggie Reg, Hendrix said he has not decided if he will run for mayor again. And while Hendrix was mum earlier today about his mysterious filing, he left the door open for another mayoral run. As he left the Department of Elections, an unidentified woman offered a friendly comment: “You should have been mayor.”

Hendrix reacted with a smile and while standing next to his former campaign spokesman Greg Bowens, he said: “I still might be, you never know.”
