Officials in Traverse City are considering the legality of raising chickens in the city after several inquiries from prospective urban farmers, the Record Eagle reports.
Kimberly Dante, who lives in the Central Neighborhood of the 14,500 resident town, told the Record Eagle, “Urban farming is one of the fastest-growing trends in the U.S. today. People are giving up their lawns and putting in gardens.” Dante and her partner Nirinjan Singh want to expand their gardening with chickens which provide fertilizer, pest control and fresh eggs.
Last June the Ann Arbor city council passed an ordinance allowing residents to have up to four hens. The law requires that chickens be at least 40 feet from neighboring property and neighbors must sign an approval waiver before a permit to raise chickens will be issued. According the Ann Arbor city clerk’s office, 16 chicken permits have been issued.
Poultry activists in Ann Arbor have created A2citychickens.com as a resource for farmers.
