Macomb county sheriff unlikely to run for Gov.

By Todd A. Heywood | 05.11.09 | 10:16 am

Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel is unlikely to turn his exploratory committee into an election committee in a bid to succeed Gov. Jennifer Granholm, the Detroit Free Press reports. Hackel, a Democrat, formed an exploratory committee at the end of last year– which is one of the first steps towards running for large office like governor.

But Hackel says Lt. Gov. John Cherry and other Democrats have already sewn up labor endorsements.

Being out of the governor’s race does not mean Hackel is out entirely. He is, according to the Free Press, possibly putting his political eye towards a run for another executive post, such as County Executive of Macomb county. Of course, that post has not even been created yet, as it is part of a charter proposal voters will be asked to approve in November.
