The Committee to Protect Journalists, a global press freedom organization, has issued a statement of concern over the May 1 conviction of Michigan Citizen reporter Diane Bukowski on felony police obstruction charges.
Bukowski was arrested in Detroit while covering the scene of a deadly police chase and crash on Nov. 4.
“We are monitoring the proceedings closely because of their implications for press freedom,” Joel Simon, CPJ’s executive director, said in a statement released in response to inquiry by Michigan Messenger, “We are particularly troubled that a state trooper deleted two photographs. The prosecution strikes us as excessive and we worry that it could send a message to reporters that covering an accident or crime scene could make them subject to felony charges.”
