Monica Conyers tries to jump on Bing’s bandwagon, asked to leave

By Ed Brayton | 05.06.09 | 5:06 pm

monica_conyersAs Michigan Messenger reported Tuesday night, at the end of the Detroit special mayoral election victory party for Dave Bing at the Doubletree hotel, Monica Conyers appeared on stage wearing a hat with her name boldly stitched into it. That seemed a little odd since Conyers’ husband, U.S. Rep. John Conyers, had endorsed Bing’s opponent, Ken Cockrel Jr., during the race. According to a well-placed source who was at Bing victory party, Conyers was not only not invited to be there, but was told to get off stage — in no uncertain terms.

That source, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Michigan Messenger what went down:

Monica Conyers jumped on to the stage uninvited, with her name emblazoned on her hat — as if no one would know who it was without the hat. A Bing campaign staffer, no doubt well aware that she was there trying to jump on the Bing bandwagon while her husband was across town trying to get Cockrel elected [and thus allow her to keep her job as city council president], asked Conyers politely twice to leave the stage. When she refused to do so, the staffer got more blunt, telling her to ‘get the [expletive] off the stage.’”

Our source says he got more than his recommended daily allowance of irony by witnessing this scene.

Conyers’ press representative was not available for comment Wednesday afternoon. We’ll update this post with the councilwoman’s take on the situation if her office returns our call with comment.
