DETROIT — When businessman David Bing was elected Detroit’s next mayor Tuesday night, it also set in motion major changes to the Detroit City Council lineup.
Cockrel — who before the election said of the prospect of going back to the city council “[b]een there done that. I’m not looking to go back” — will now return to his former position as council president, which he held the eight months since then-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick resigned amid the text message scandal that toppled him from power.
Monica Conyers, who served as city council president while Cockrel was interim mayor, will be move back into the office of council president pro-tem. JoAnn Watson who was stepped in to serve as council president pro tem while Conyers was acting president, will see her title revert to the title of councilwoman.
