Actual budget cut is $304 million, not $349 million

LANSING — $304 million or $349 million? The actual total amount of cuts under Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s executive order issued Tuesday morning is $304 million. While some media outlets are citing a higher figure — $349 million — Bob Emerson, state budget director clarified the discrepancy during hearings this morning before a joint session of the House and Senate Appropriations committees.

During his testimony, Emerson noted that some of the cuts accounted for in the $349 million were actually transfers from other funding mechanisms and were “counted twice.”

“The cut is $304 million from the General Fund,” he told legislators.
