Closing of Detroit crime lab could cut state police staff

By Ed Brayton | 05.05.09 | 2:08 am

The Detroit Free Press reports that the closing of the Detroit crime lab last year may force Gov. Granholm to cut the number of state troopers in order to make up for the millions of additional dollars being spent by the State Police crime labs to do the work of the Detroit lab.

The closure of Detroit’s crime lab last fall will be a main culprit if Gov. Jennifer Granholm announces layoffs of dozens of newly minted State Police troopers Tuesday as part of $300 million in cuts to help balance the state’s budget.

The state expects to spend an extra $7 million this year for its State Police crime labs, specifically to process evidence in more than 20,000 cases once handled by the Detroit Police Department’s crime lab. The overwhelming workload also has delayed processing of evidence in non-Detroit cases.

The lab costs put everything else in the State Police budget at risk, including the jobs of 83 troopers hired in December.

The state also may be forced to close the Marquette State Police crime lab earlier than planned and reduce road patrols.

Details of the governor’s proposed budget cuts are due to be announced at 11 am on Tuesday.
