With polls showing the presidential candidates neck and neck in Michigan, John McCain is expected to follow Barack Obama’s lead and discuss energy policy in Michigan on Tuesday at Detroit Edison’s Fermi 2 nuclear plant in Monroe.

McCain has called for the construction of 45 new nuclear power plants by 2030, and supported legislation that would give billions of dollars in loan guarantees to the nuclear industry.
Fermi 2, a 1,100 megawatt boiling water reactor near the shore of Lake Erie, was forced to make an emergency shutdown this year when two water pumps failed.
The event at Fermi is invitation only and closed to the media.
The AFL-CIO has called for an 11 am protest in front of the plant.

In an e-mail to supporters the Michigan AFL-CIO wrote:

“We need you to join us for a rally to show John McCain that Michigan’s labor movement is opposed to his plans to extend tax cuts that only benefit the wealthy and expand unfair free trade agreements.”
