Detroit News endorses Bing for Detroit mayor

By Minehaha Forman | 04.27.09 | 10:49 am

The Detroit News editorial board picked businessman David Bing as the candidate best suited to serve as mayor of Detroit for the next eight months. The editorial asserts that Bing will offer Detroit a “fresh start” and will clean up the smears that Detroit’s local and national image has endured since the Kilpatrick text scandal.

The endorsement was expected as The Detroit News also endorsed Bing during the primary elections.

With Detroit’s two major newspaper endorsements under his belt, Bing may have an edge over his opponent, interim mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr.

But even with both endorsements it isn’t a sure shot for Bing. The May 5 special election is expected to be a tight race and the Cockrel campaign has launched an aggressive campaign online and among grassroots groups to garner support from Detroiters.

Whoever wins will serve remainder of ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s term.

An Aug. 4 primary and a Nov. 3 general election will determine who will serve as mayor for the regular four-year term starting in January.
