Land says campaign will cost $3-4 million

By Ed Brayton | 04.24.09 | 11:16 am

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land told the Midland Daily News that she is running for governor in 2010 — everyone already knew that — and that she “expects her campaign for the nomination will cost $3 to $4 million — mostly for advertising.” That seems awfully low given that in 2006, Gov. Granholm spend nearly $14 million getting elected and her challenger, Dick DeVos, spent more than $40 million trying to defeat her. And that was with essentially no primaries, as Granholm was the incumbent and DeVos’ two challengers dropped out a year before the election. Land, on the other hand, faces a bruising primary against Attorney General Mike Cox, Rep. Pete Hoekstra and possibly several more Republican candidates. $4 million isn’t even going to scratch the surface.
