Future of Lake Orion GM plant in doubt

By Ed Brayton | 04.23.09 | 3:45 pm

As expected and as we reported last night, General Motors announced today that it would shutdown most of its assembly plants for up to 8 weeks over the summer in hopes of cutting their inventory during the current sales slump. The shutdown will decrease their production over the next three months by 190,000 vehicles. The New York Times’ Michelle Maynard has been posting on her Twitter account as she speaks with GM North America president Troy Clarke to get more information about the shutdowns.

She wrote a short while ago that Clarke was “ducking reporters’ questions about future of Lake Orion, MI plant, amid rumors plant may close.” But earlier she had written that the shutdowns “do not affect Lake Orion plant, because Malibu is in short supply.” She lists the plants in Michigan that will be closed from one to eight weeks as the assembly plants in Lansing, Detroit/Hamtramck, Pontiac and Flint.

Details are still coming out as to which plants will be shut down and for how long and which models will be affected.
