A bill that will allow a second adult to adopt a child — and thus share in the legal responsibilities of caring for the child — has passed its first hurdle in the process of becoming law. In a party line vote the bill was sent from the House Judiciary Committee this morning for consideration by the full house. The Democrats, who control the house and the panel, voted in favor of moving the bill, while the Republicans voted against it.
Here’s how individuals on the Committee voted:
Mark S. Meadows (D), Committee Chair, 69th District -YES
Ellen Cogen Lipton (D), Majority Vice-Chair, 27th District -YES
Lisa Brown (D), 39th District -YES
Bob Constan (D), 16th District – YES
Marc R. Corriveau (D), 20th District – ABSENT
Andy Coulouris (D), 95th District -YES
Andrew J. Kandrevas (D), 13th District – YES
Bettie Cook Scott (D), 3rd District – YES
Rebekah Warren (D), 53rd District – YES
Tonya Schuitmaker (R), Minority Vice-Chair, 80th District – NO
Justin Amash (R), 72nd District – NO
Joseph Haveman (R), 90th District – NO
Rick Jones (R), 71st District – NO
Eileen Kowall (R), 44th District – NO
Tory Rocca (R), 30th District – NO
The legislation has come under fire because it would legalize adoption for gay couples, but supporters note it would also assist in nontraditional family units where, for instance, a sister and grandmother are caring for a child.
