Free Press endorses Bing

By Ed Brayton | 04.20.09 | 11:04 am

To the surprise of many, the Detroit Free Press has endorsed Dave Bing in the Detroit mayoral race, calling him “a natural leader, experienced businessman and — important in a city where government needs an overhaul — not a product of its political system.”

This can only be seen as a serious blow to Cockrel’s campaign. The city’s other newspaper, the more conservative Detroit News, is expected to endorse Bing as well. Bing is viewed as more pro-business than Cockrel, especially in the Detroit business community. On top of the loss by Cockrel in his attempt to overrule the city council on the Cobo Hall transfer late last week, this could help swing the race in Bing’s direction.

Polling by Mark Grebner last week showed Cockrel with a small lead over Bing, but those numbers came out before last week’s debate, before the appeals court loss in the Cobo case and before the Free Press endorsement.

That's not exactly correct. I previously showed BING with a small lead, but in the last ten days that lead has disappeared. There are day-to-day fluctuations, but my polling has never shown Cockrel with a statistically significant lead.

It would be more correct to say that my polling shows a race too close to call at this point.
